Katrina is going to blast through New Orleans tonight and tomorrow morning, with the eye projected to make landfall somewhere around 7 AM. If it hits the city directly, the storm surge will overwhelm the levees.
If it does, it is quite possibly going to kill more people in the next 24 hours than died in the 9/11 attacks.
And we cannot do anything about it. We cannot get them to safety.
Some simply won't leave -- and Darwin can have the last word about those -- but too many others are unreachable, or could be reached but have no transportation, and they will die for the unforgivable crime of being poor in the wrong place at the wrong time. With more than a day of warning, all of us knowing this would happen, but no resources that we could spare to save them.
Unreality sets in. What century is this? What country is this?
